Trying to Connect the Dots of the Emerging Church Movement

If you’re trying to get your mind around the Emerging Church Movement, here’s a 5-page magazine article that attempts to explain it. “The Future or Fad? A Look at the Emerging Church Movement,” is written by Scot McKnight, religion professor at North Park University, Chicago. McKnight also writes the popular Jesus Creed blog, which focuses on the emerging church.

Personally, I don’t think the Emerging Church Movement is going anywhere. It is too nebulous and too philosophical to ever capture the minds and hearts of average Christians. That’s my opinion. This McKnight article is a good example. The purpose of the article is to give a brief explanation of the movement to those who are trying to “figure this thing out.” Read the article and then you tell me, do you really have any better understanding of what the Emergent Church Movement is really all about? I didn’t think so.

I can describe the Emerging Church Movement in words and phrases, but I can’t connect the dots. Post-modernism. Candles. Orthodoxy. Missional. Community. Brian McLaren. N.T. Wright. Uncertainty (and corresponding charges of relativism).

Anyway, thought you might be interested in McKnight’s article.
